My dad and my uncle Dick both vol-
unteered to fight in World War II. Dad
survived, but Dick did not. Uncle
Dick was wounded on September 7,
1944. EXACTLY seven years later
on September 7th, 1951, I was born.
Until I researched facts for this article,
I never knew the story. But now I can
understand what compelled me to vol-
unteer for the Army. I rose to the rank
of Captain in the 101st Airborne Divi-
sion. My uncle was promoted to Captain after his death. As
Memorial Day 2017 approaches, please try to remember what
this day is all about. It’s not just “another day off work.” Peo-
ple gave their lives for us to live in this great country.
